I a lw ay s encourag e such people, but I a l so explain that theres a big difference betw een being a w ri ter and w ri ting . In most cases these individuals are dreaming of w ealth and fame, not the long hours a lone a t a ty pew ri ter. Y ouve g ot to w ant to w ri te, I say to them, not w ant to be a w ri ter. The reality i s that w ri ting i s a lonely , private and poor-pay ing affair. For every w ri ter k i ssed by fortune there are thousands m ore w hose long ing i s never requited. Even those w ho succeed often know long periods of neg lect and poverty . I did. W hen I left a 20 -y ear-career in the C oast Guard to become a freelance w riter, I had no prospects a t a l l . W hat I did have w as a friend in New Y ork C i ty , Georg e S ims, w i th w hom Id g row n up in Henning , Tenn. Georg e found me m y home, a cleaned-out storag e room in the Greenw ich V i llag e apartment building w here he w orked as superintendent. It didnt even matter that it w as cold and had no bathroom. I im mediately boug ht a used manual ty pew ri ter and felt l ike a g enuine w ri ter. A fter a y ear or so, how ever, I still hadnt g otten a break and beg an to doubt my self. It w as so hard to sell a story that I barely made enoug h to eat. B ut I knew I w anted to w ri te. I had dreamed about it for y ears.
