Strengths/Weaknesses
Good growth so far. But pace of growth lags way behind AC.
Different deregulation scenarios require different consulting services:
Scenario 1 (improved regulation): Cost allocation, MIS, performance evaluation
Scenario 2 (Wholesale wheeling): Restructuring alternatives, process improvement and marginal costing tools
Scenario 3 (limited retail competition): Transformation, customer management programs, revenue enhancement
Scenario 4(full retail competition): ABC by client segment, critical process ABM, marketing development
Strong in scenarios 1 2. Problems in scenarios 3 and 4.
-Don’t marshal resources needed to serve category 3 clients
-Distinctiveness of utilities. Hard to get skills to cross the industry border.
-Need for communication to internal personnel of challenges, rewards of the industry
-Miss opportunities to leverage expertise gained in other industries; e.g., telecom
Can’t do strategy for every utility. Need to choose long-term partners.
Need stong research back-up for scenario 3 and 4 services.
Need to leverage expertise from either other industries or other regions
Need for knowledge-sharing enhancements
