5. Main Engine Cooling System Operation 5.1 Main Engine Cooling System Operation: (listening script) The main engine cooling system can be subdivided into 4 parts. The jacket cooling system is a closed circuit in which water is circulated from engine through a pump and cooler and then back to engine. Either water or oil is used for piston cooling. Where oil is being used, it is generally the same grade as the main engine lubricating system. There are advantages and disadvantages of using both media, water is a better medium in heat transfer but the chances of water ingress into lube oil system, is greater as compared to oil cooling, which is not as good as water, but does not pose a problem with any possible chances of water contamination(污染). The fuel valve nozzle cooling water system cools the nozzles of each cylinder unit which is exposed to intense heat during operation of the engine. Cooling will maintain the nozzle dimension normal and allowing nozzles to function properly. Normally sea water is used in the main engine scavenge air cooling system, but a growing trend towards using fresh water for cooling is evident in the newer ships. This cooling system is to achieve dense and dry scavenge air in order to achieve optimum combustion. 5.2 Circuit of main engine cooling system
