She first stays with her sister whose working-class home is, however, too poor to keep her. Then she lives on a traveling salesman,Druet. And then a respectable manager, Hurstwood. But neither the two men give her happiness. At last, Sister Carrie becomes a successful woman on her own. In this novel, the author uses a great deal of symbolism, which is one of the distinguished features of this novel. So this thesis aims at analysing the symbolism and to see how it reflects the society at that time and how it describes the person and express the theme. So what is symbolism? It is a kind of writing style by using one specific thing to indicate another thing or some ideas. By using the symbolism, Dresier wants to express the theme, that is no one can get happiness in this money-centered society, and to tell the nature of the capitalism. I The first symbolism— Rocking chair Rocking chair is one of the main symbolisms in this novel.
