Enroute Flight Operations in Airline Networks Outline 1. fleets and aircraft routing 2. crewing and crew scheduling 3. complex airline networks 4. delay propagation modeling --- simulation models 5. delay propagation modeling --- regression models 1. fleets and aircraft routing 1.1 fleet assignment and demand uncertainties The primary task of fleet assignment and hence the various and complex fleet assignment models is to allocate available airline resources to best match uncertain passenger demands for flights due to airline competition and the local/global economic environment. From historical booking records, airlines can build demand “profiles” on a leg or an origin-destination (OD) basis. Fleet assignment optimization models are usually configured to maximize the profitability of airline schedules by considering stochastic passenger demands and fleet capacity allocation. 1.2 aircraft routing and routing constraints There are three main constraints: (1) flight continuity (2) flight coverage (3) maintenance requirements (1) flight continuity Each line of routing is designed for operation by an individual aircraft. In addition, two requirements: the destination airport of a predecessor flight is the origin airport of a successor flight; and, the time gap between the scheduled arrival time of a predecessor flight and the scheduled departure time of a successor flight is longer than the minimum turnaround time of a specific fleet type. (2) flight coverage The flight coverage constraint in aircraft routing is to ensure that any flight on the timetable is at least operated by a fleet type. (3) maintenance requirements There are four major categories of aircraft maintenance, namely A, B, C and D. A checks are carried out the most frequently and the interval between checks depends on the type of aircraft, the maintenance schedules provided by manufacturers, and the regulations of Aviation authorities.
