Analysis of the teaching material
The lesson is from the new teaching material Book2 Unit4 History and Tradition. The theme of this unit focuses on learning a country through its history, which belongs to the history, society and culture of the “People and Society”. This reading text describes the long and complex formation process of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the close cooperation and relatively independent relationship among England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in simple language. Then, the text changes from a larger historical main line to a more specific aspect. Through reading the brief development process of British history, students can understand the general situation of British geography, society and culture, and think deeply about the relationship between history and social culture.
Analysis of the students
Students in Grade One has learned English for years, and they have mastered some basic language points and language skills, and they can get some detailed information in the text, and has mastered some reading strategies such as skimming and scanning but have some difficulties in concluding the text by timeline since the history of the UK is not so familiar to the students. Besides, they may not have a clear knowledge of how to read a map. But the topic of this text may active Ss’ interest in learning to understand much more about the country and its traditions in order to prepare for their future visit. At last, the Ss are encouraged to reflect on the importance and significance of learning a county’s history, tradition and culture to cultivate their critical thinking.
