Before class, show students some pictures about natural disasters in the world and make students aware of today’s topic.
Present words related to disasters by showing pictures.
Have students read the text for 1 minute to find out what literary genre is and the basic elements in this text.
When and where did this disaster happen?
What is the first and second disaster?
Have students read paragraph 12 silently and answer the following questions:
Whats the structure of this text?
2: Who is the eyewitness? Where was he then? Did he suffer from the fire?
Give students 2 minutes to answer the 3 detailed questions about each paragraph.
Q1: Why couldnt the firefighters put out the fires when they first started?
Q2: How long did it take for half of the city centre to burn? Why did the fire spread so fast?
Q3: How did the people of San Francisco behave during the disaster?
Reflection Ask students to write an adjective to describe how the people feel during the earthquake and give supportive evidence.
Have students read each paragraph loudly, and make them appreciate the language by finishing the following tasks:
1) Find out the similar sentences using the same word “Never” to describe the result of the earthquake and the people.
2) Find out the repetition of a word to describe the result of the earthquake.
3) What did the writer want to tell us by describing in these ways?
Have students read this text loudly and try to compare the language by using different rhetoric devices with the factual statements of the former reading on page 50.
Have students carry out an interview between a news reporter and two earthquake survivors to talk about the Great San Francisco earthquake including the experiences and how to protect ourselves.
Assignment write a documentary reportage about flood using what we have learned in this class.
