Help students to learn about how people celebrate Halloween in the USA as well as some background knowledge about Halloween.
Help students to have an idea of the writing plan of the passage introducing a festival.

Step1 Lead-in:
Show a picture of a Chinese red lantern, then a picture of a pumpkin lantern. Then the topic ‘Halloween’ is led in.
Step 2. Presentation
Show the students some pictures of celebrating Halloween. Help them to be familiar with some key phrases in the text. Write them down on the blackboard: dress up, wear masks, paint her face, make a pumpkin lantern, play ‘trick and treat’, give us candy as a treat, play a trick on her
Step3 Pre-reading : What do you want to know about Halloween?
Suppose you are Millie. What do you want Wendy to tell you about Halloween in her letter to you ?
Write down 2-3 questions on the paper.
Show your partners your questions.
(Write some questions on the blackboard.)
Step4. While-reading
Task 1 Look through the letter and try to find out the answers to the following questions. (Skimming)
1. When is Halloween?
2. Do children play ‘trick or treat’ on that day?
3. Do they have a party on the evening of that day?
Then check the answers to the questions above as well as some students’ questions on the blackboard.
Task 2 Read the letter and complete the notes.
Help Millie to complete the notes about Halloween.
Check the answers. Help some students to complete their answers if necessary.
Task 3 Read Paragraph 2 3 carefully and complete the following passage.
Scanning: Give Ss several minutes to scan the text and discuss with their partners.

Task 4 Read the letter and work out the main idea of each paragraph .
