Hello everyone, my name is Wang Chao from the Printmaking Department ofChinaAcademy ofArt. Thecourseoftoday isABriefHistory ofChineseWoodblock Printing, whichwillbedividedintothreeparts. Ancient Chinese “printing” was developed based on the progress of writing, paper,andink. Only the mature development of these technologies could boost the invention ofancientprinting,that is,woodblockprinting. Before the invention of early writing, Chinese people knotted rope and carvedwoodtorecordthings. During the Yin and Shang period from the 16th century B.C. to the 11th centuryB.C., oraclebone scriptwasinventedby Chinese. Before important events, such as state or family affairs, the ruling class carved these “divination script” on turtle nails or animal bones in order to divinefortune. The content was mostly about divination results and important national events. Thistypeofwritingon oraclebones,called“oraclebone script”, istheearliest andrelativelymaturewritingfoundin China, andisbasically formedaspresent-day Chinesecharacters. Oracle bone script has several common forms, such as pictograms, ideograms,ideogrammiccompounds,andPhono-semanticcompounds, which arealsoapplicablein later Chinesecharacters. To date, the Shang Dynasty characters contain the largest number of oracle bone scripts. Most ofthemwerecarvedwith aknife,andafewwrittenwith ink. The next one I’m going to introduce is the Chinese bronze inscriptions cast onbronzevessels. Some scholars therefore called oracle bone scripts the common form of the ShangDynasty character, andbronzeinscriptionstheofficialform ofthe ShangDynasty character. The arrangement form of “top to bottom, the right to the left” of Chinese characters has been established since the Chinese bronze inscriptions in the Shang Dynasty, which later onbecamethemajorway ofChineseliteraturereading.
