Lesson 2 Rules of the Game
Teaching Objective:
·To read and talk about special occasions
·To listen for specific information and understanding words in context
·To learn about and practise congratulating and giving thanks
Difficult Points and Important Points:
·Students might be shy when using the phrases learnt aloud.
·Students might not be experienced with planning or attending formal events.
Step 1:
(1) Activate and Share
You are invited to a wedding or a close friends birthday party in the UK. What do you need to prepare and what do you need to talk into consideration?
· Tell students that this lesson is about special occasions. Remind them that occasion is a synonym for event or activity, and that it is usually used for parties or fancy events.
· Then read the rubric and discuss their ideas. Use the web to help in the discussion, but tell students that they should not write answers on the lines.
· Review the Information in the Skill Builder. Explain that students will be listening for specific information in this lesson.
(2) Listen for Understanding
Listen to an interview about parties. Complete the information about party advice in Activity
Then use the information to talk about party advice in the UK.
·Tell students that they will be listening to an Interview.
·Review once again the information in the Skill Builder. What should we do before listening? Elicit that they need to know what they are to listen for.
·Tell students that they will first listen to fill in the blanks in the word web in Activity 1.What should we do the first time we listen? They should listen for general ideas and not complete the task. What should we do the second time we listen? Elicit that they should listen for specific Information.
·Play the audio two times and allow students time to complete the web.
(3) Listen again and answer the questions.
· Read the rubric.
· If needed, play the audio again for students.
