Let’s first look at what those who intended to stay plan to do. There is a clear preference for starting their own business – over agricultural occupations, and this is even more clear for young women who have little or no experience of working the land. Whereas their parents’ generation were primarily motivated by the increased income opportunities available in cities, this generation are far more interested in personal development. They do not want to do the dirty, dangerous and demeaning work – and want to compete with the urban resident population for decent jobs. We will come back to this issue of personal development later. First, there are some interesting findings on how the economic downturn will affect migration trends. Of those that intend to migrate again in the future, there will be a significant increase in the number that plan to migrate within the province: from 16 percent of respondents, to 39 percent. This is because of the number of jobs that are being created within Hunan, particularly in manufacturing. Additional Notes: Of Hunan’s 12 million migrant workers, 70% live outside of the province. Of the return migrants: 6.4% intend to live in the countryside for a long time, while 50.1% will move to another place to find a job immediately after the Spring Festival, and 43.5% plan to stay at home for a while before migrating again. Now that jobs are harder to come by, it looks like they will increasingly turn to formal and regulated employment services.
