Workshop 12-2 Direct Transient Analysis of a Car Chassis • Workshop Objectives – Know how to define a time varying displacement – Perform a transient analysis using the Direct Method – Graph response data versus time • Software Version – Patran 2017.0.2 – MSC Nastran 2017.1 • Files Required – WS12-2_Nastran_input.bdf (Nastran Path) – WS12-2_car_w_suspension.bdf (Nastran and Patran Path) • Problem Description – In this particular problem, the user is asked to perform a Direct Transient Analysis on a car model to simulate the effect of going over a bump on the road. 3 Direct Transient Analysis of a Car Chassis © 2018 MSC Software Corporation • Problem Description (Cont.) – A time-dependent unit enforced displacement (half-sine input) will be used to simulate the bump and is applied to the right front suspension of the car. In the end, the user will examine the bump effect at three locations on the car by plotting a displacement vs. time plot. Note : For this workshop, structural damping is being specified in two ways: PARAM,G and the GE field on the material entry. In order for structural damping to be used in transient response, it is necessary to convert it to viscous damping. PARAM,W3 converts the “G” damping and PARAM,W4 converts the “GE” damping. W3 and W4 are the frequencies at which the conversion occurs and are defined in rad/sec. In this case, “G” damping is being converted at 7.64 Hz and “GE” damping is being converted at 18.6 Hz.
