Teaching Goals
The teaching goal of this unit is to introduce the concept of past tense and teach students how to use it in simple sentences. In addition, students will learn some new vocabulary words and practice pronunciation and conversation skills.
Language Points
Vocabulary
Some new vocabulary words introduced in this unit include:
Happy
Sad
Angry
Tired
Excited
Disappointed
These words will be introduced through a variety of activities and exercises designed to introduce students to the meanings and uses of each word. Students will be encouraged to practice using these words in context and will be given opportunities to use them in conversation and writing exercises.
Past Tense
The main focus of this unit is on introducing the concept of past tense. Students will learn how to form simple past tense sentences and will practice using them in a variety of contexts. Key grammar structures include:
Regular verbs in past tense (-ed)
Irregular verbs in past tense (e.g.?‘went’, ‘ate’, ‘saw’)
Sentence Structure
In addition to focusing on past tense, this unit will also introduce students to some basic sentence structures and word order patterns in English. This includes:
Subject-verb-object sentences
Subject-verb-adverb sentences
Subject-verb-prepositional phrase sentences
Teaching Strategies
Vocabulary Building
In order to effectively introduce new vocabulary words, it’s important to use a variety of teaching strategies. These might include:
Picture dictionaries and flashcards to introduce new words
Role-playing and dialogue exercises to encourage conversation and context-based learning
Games and activities that require students to use new words in context (e.g.?word matching games, sentence building exercises)
