Chapter 0 IntroductionIntroduction and course reviewPrerequisite - Statics Hello everyone, with this video, we start the study of Mechanics of Materials, this video gives the introduction and review for this course. This course continues from the previous course theoretical mechanics Statics, Therefore, you are expected to have solid foundation in statics. If this not the case, you are strongly encourged to review statics before you start learning this course. In this course, it still deals with objects that are in static equilibrium. Therefore, the most important set of equilibrium equations in statics still apply here. StaticsEquilibrium of forces on rigid bodies at restMechanics of MaterialsEffects of forces on deformable bodiesApplied force (F)Reaction force(R)Deals with rigid body (undeformable)Deals with real, defromable materialsStudies how materials behave under loadingDistribution of internal forces *Statics discusses the *equilibrium of rigid bodies while at rest. *In statics, objects are assumed to be rigid bodies, *which means any change in shape and size is neglected. But it can not be ture. Because if that is the case, we can build up buildings that can withstand as much load as we want. But real objects do deform. That is what this course studies. *Mechanics of materials differs from statics, **instead it deals with the real objects that deforms under applied forces. The intensity of deformation and the distribution of internal forces are the primary interests in mechancis of materials. We can use this knowledge to design structures that are both economic and strong enough. PPPPScenario 1:P = 10 kNWill the second bar fail under the same P = 10 kN ? Now let’s look at some senarios and consider some questions.Senario one, *here is one solid rod with a force P applied at its ends along the longitudinal axis of the rod, *if the rod breaks when *P reaches 10 KN. It looks like this 10 KN is a critical value, for it marks the failure point of the material
