Asthedominantdiscoursewouldhaveit,theeconomicworldisapureandperfectorder,implacablyunrollingthelogicofitspredictableconsequences,andprompttorepressallviolationsbythesanctionsthatitinflicts,eitherautomaticallyor-moreunusually-throughtheintermediaryofitsarmedextensions,theInternationalMonetaryFund(IMF)andtheOrganizationforEconomicCooperationandDevelopment(OECD)andthepoliciestheyimpose:reducinglabourcosts,reducingpublicexpendituresandmakingworkmoreflexible.Isthedominantdiscourseright?Whatif,inreality,thiseconomicorderwerenomorethantheimplementationofautopia-theutopiaofneoliberalism-thusconvertedintoapoliticalproblem?Onethat,withtheaidoftheeconomictheorythatitproclaims,succeedsinconceivingofitselfasthescientificdescriptionofreality?

Thistutelarytheoryisapuremathematicalfiction.Fromthestartithasbeenfoundedonaformidableabstraction.For,inthenameofanarrowandstrictconceptionofrationalityasindividualrationality,itbracketstheeconomicandsocialconditionsofrationalorientationsandtheeconomicandsocialstructuresthataretheconditionoftheirapplication.
