Sixyearsago,SamShapiro’sfamilyadopteda15-year-oldboyfromCiteSoleil,Haiti.Afewyearslater,inJune2015,Shapirowantedtolearnmoreaboutwherehisbrothergrewup,sohevisitedhisbrother’shometown.

WhenShapiroreturnedtohisownhomeinMinnesota,UnitedStates,hetoldhisfriendJackMoeaboutwhathesawinHaiti.

WhatShapirosawwasasmallcitywhere100percentofthepopulationlivedinpoverty.Hesawhomelesschildrenwithnoaccesstoeducation,activitiesorsafespacestoplay.Healsosawarundown,abandonedbasketballcourt.

Shapirocouldn’tfixeverything.Buthecoulddosomething.

“Ithoughtathleticscouldbeusedtogivekidsopportunitiesfororganizedactivitiesthatcouldkeepthemoffthestreets,”saidShapiro.

Ayearafterhisfirstvisit,ShapiroreturnedtoCiteSoleilwithMoe.Thenextmonth,ShapiroandMoe–then16-year-oldsophomores(大二学生)attheBlakeSchool–formedanonprofit,called“SprinttoCiteSoleil”,tobenefitthecity’syouth.

Thecore(核心的)programofSprinttoCiteSoleilisbasketball,butitalsoincorporates(包含)nutritionandcommunity-buildingtobenefitchildrenaged5to18.

“Ourmissionoriginallywastoprovideanewbasketballcourt,”saidMoe.“Butwesoonrealizedthatalotofkidswantedtoplaybasketball,andmorethanjustacourtwasneeded.Wesentjerseys(运动衫),basketballs,basketballpumpsandshoes.Hundredsofkidsshowedupforaclinic.”

Theysoonhired10coachesandfourcookstopreparenutritious(有营养的)mealsforthe160boysandgirlswhotraineverySaturdayandSunday.
