ChinaisavitalmarketformanyAmericanbusinesses.ItisalsoanimportantsourceoftalentandinnovationthathelpsAmericancompaniesboosttheirglobalcompetitiveness.Atthesametime,thepresenceofAmericancompaniesinChinastrengthenstheUS-Chinarelationshipandtheeconomiesofbothcountries,butthebenefitsgobeyondtradefiguresandsimplemeasuresofprofit

andloss.Bypromotingvaluessuchastransparency,respectforworkers,andanti-corruptionthroughouttheirentiresupplychains,Americanbusinessesleadbyexample,improvingthebusinessclimateinChinawhilecreatingjobsbackhome.

Despitetheexpansioninbilateraltradeinrecentyears,mistrustbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinaremainshigh,andrelations

arestrained.Theneedforaccurateinformationhasneverbeengreater.Formorethan25years,AmChamChina’sBusinessClimateSurvey(BCS)hashelpedmeetthisneedbyprovidingaccurate,detailedinformationaboutthekeyissuesandchallengesaffectingUSbusinessinChina.

KeyFindings:

•2023FinancialPerformance:AmericancompaniesinChinareportimprovedfinancialperformancefor2023withincreasedprofitabilityandEBITmargins.Despitethis,slightlylessthanhalfofrespondentsexpectedtobeprofitable.

•OptimismRecovers:Thetwo-yearbusinessoutlookforChinahasimproved,withmembersshowingincr
