Fifty-oneyearsago,universityPresidentKingmanBrewsterdeliveredanaddresstotheenteringclassofnewundergraduates,welcomingthemtoYale,justasIamdoingnow.Atthetime,theuniversitywascomingoutofaveryunusualyear.(Wecanrelate!)Justafewmonthsearlier,inMay1970,tensofthousandsofpeoplefromacrossthecountryhadcometoNewHaven—andtoYale—toprotestthetrialsofBobbySealeandErickaHuggins,leadersoftheBlackPantherParty,whowerebeingtriedformurder.ThousandsofNationalGuardtroopshadbeendeployedtothecityassomeexpectedtheproteststoturnviolent.Thesituationwasextremelytense.Fortunately,reasonprevailed,theprotestsremainedlargelypeaceful,andnoonewasseriouslyinjured,letalonekilled.
