enormousglobalburdenofcommunicablediseases.Effortstoreducethe

prevalenceofthesediseases,whichincludemalaria,

tuberculosis,HIV/AIDS,

hepatitis,sexuallytransmittedinfectionsandneglected

tropicaldiseases(NTDs),arecurrentlynotoncourseto

reachSustainableDevelopmentGoaltargets.

However,theinfrastructure,relationshipsandknowledgebuiltbysomecommunicablediseaseprogrammescanbe

importantassetsfor

strengtheningPHC,particularlyinreachingtheworld’smostvulnerablepopulations.Togettheworldbackontrackto

sustainablyreduce

communicablediseasesby2030,andtoensurethat

servicesandinterventionsreachthemostmarginalised

communities,these

programmesneedtobefullyintegratedintoPHCapproaches.

ManyofthegainsmadeinthepastdecadehavenowstalledorevenreversedasaresultoftheCOVID-19pandemic.

?Progresshasbeenmadeinexpandinghealthservicecoverageforcommunicablediseases,butthisprogressisnowstagnantorreversing.Inequalitiesinthecoverageofinterventionsfor

HIV/AIDS,hepatitisandmalaria,aswellasservicesforsexuallytransmittedinfections,havedeepenedforthemostvulnerable.

?Communicablediseasesremainamajorfinancialburdenformany.Peopleoftenhavetochoosebetweenpayingfortreatmentorothernecessitieslikefoodandshelter.

?Competingglobalchallengesthreatenordivertalready-inadequatehealthfunding.Fundingformanydiseaseshaseitherdeclinedinrecentyearsorisinsufficienttoaddressongoinghealthcrises.
