35%ofthecountrypopulationlivesinruralareas.Thenumberofvillages

isnearly37thousandandabouttwo-thirdsofthemhavepopulations

below500.Besides,one-thirdsofruraldwellersliveinthevillages

locatedwithinandadjacenttotheforests.

Theneedtoredressregionalimbalancesandtoimproveincome

distributionamongvarioussectionsofsocietyisengagingtheattentionof

policymakers.Thecreationofemployment,theimprovementofrural

livingstandardsandthereversalofthetrendtowardsmigrationofrural

populationstourbanareasaresomeofthemainobjectivesofTurkish

governmentsruraldevelopmentpolicies(MuthooandOnul,1996)

Atthebeginningof1990s,Turkeyhasdecidedtodiversifytourism

inordertocompetewithwesterncountries.Thebasicphilosophyofnew

tourismconceptofTurkeycanbesummarizedastourismactivityinfour

seasons,throughoutthecountryandevaluatingcultural,historical,

environmentalpotentialofthecountry.Inthiscontext,Turkeyisworking

ontwotypesofalternativetourism.Thefirsttypeincludesbotanical,air

balloon,water-related,thermalandhealth,physicalrecreation,religious

andculturaltourism.Thesecondtype,closelyrelatedtothefirst,includes
