Methods:Weconductedapopulation-basedcross-sectionalstudyinanurbanBeijingsampleof2334subjectsaged=60years(943menand1391women)in2001to2002.PADwasassessedbysymptomsofintermittentclaudication(IC)asmeasuredbytheWHO/Rosequestionnaireandanankle-armsystolicbloodpressureindex(AAI)of0.90.

Results:TheprevalenceofPADdefinedbyICwas11.3%(men,8.0%;women,13.6%);15.3%(men,11.7%;women,17.7%)byAAI,and19.8%(men,14.7%;women,23.2%)bybothcriteria.Afteradjustingforage,gender,maritalstatus,education,alcoholdrinking,exercise,bodymassindex,andhistoriesofhypertensionanddiabetesmellitus,theoddsratiosand95%confidenceintervalsofPADforcurrentsmokersvsneversmokerswere1.54(1.12to2.11)and1.28(0.91to1.79)forformersmokers(stoppedsmokingforatleast2years).Therewasadose-responserelationbetweenthenumberofcigarettessmokedandincreasingris
