BackgroundandPurposeRecurrentStrokehavenotdeclinedoverpast3decades.MotivationalInterviewing(MI)MIisstructured,patient-focusedandmorecost-effectivethanmanyotherbehaviorchangemethodsPurposeThisstudytestedeffectivenessofmotivationalinterviewing(MI)forreducingstrokerecurrence,measuredbyimprovingadherencetorecommendedmedicationandlifestylechangescomparedwithusualcare.

(1)theyhadimpairmentprecludingparticipation(eg,aphasia,psychiatricconditions,cognitiveimpairment);

(2)theywereunabletoconverseinEnglish;

(3)theywereunabletogiveinformedconsent;

(4)theyhadanotherconditionlikelytoaffectparticipation(eg,significantaphasia);

(5)theywerereceivingpsychiatric/psychologicaltreatmentthatcouldcontaminatethefindings;

(6)theyweredischargedtohospital/nursinghomesettingwheremedicationsaregivenbystaff;

(7)participationwaslikelytooverburdentheindividual.

InterventionTheMIgroupreceived4MIsessionsat28days,3,6,and9monthspoststroke.Theinitialinterviewwasconductedface-to-face.(60to90minutes).Subsequentinterviewswereconductedbytelephone.Initialinterviewstook(≈30minutes).
