Thefindingswereremarkable:onaverage,bookreaderssurvivedalmosttwoyearslongerthanthosewho

didntcrackopenabook.Themorethesubjectsread,thelongertheylived,butthataslittleas30minutesadaywas

stillbeneficialintermsofsurvival.

Accountingforfactorssuchaseducationlevel,incomeandhealthstatus,thestudyfoundthatthosewhoread

morethan3.5hoursweeklywere23percentlesslikelytodieduringthat12-yearperiod.Thosewhoreadupto3.5

hours-anaverageofahalf-houraday-were17percentlesslikely.

Inotherwords,justlikeahealthydietandexercise,booksappeartopromotea“significantsurvival
