Chapter7EdmundSpenserLifeandWorksEdmundSpenser(c1552–1599)Thegreatestnon-dramaticpoetoftheEnglishRenaissance,wascalled“thepoets’poet”becauseofhisgreatinfluenceonlaterpoets.AfterheleftCambridgein1576,hetookaseriesofpositionsservingprominentEnglishnoblemen.AtthesuggestionofSirWalterRaleigh,hewenttoLondontopublishthefirstthreebooksofhisgreatromanticepicTheFaerieQueene,whichwaspublishedin1590andmadeSpenser“theprinceofpoets”inhistime.

HewasburiednearChaucer,hisgreatmedievalforerunner,inWestminsterAbbey.TheShepheardesCalenderisSpenser’sfirstmajorwork,aseriesofpastoralpoemsarrangedaccordingtothemonthsoftheyear.Itconsistsoftwelvepastoraleclogues,oneforeachmonth.Infact,theecloguesaretheauthor’sandhisfriends’commentsoncontemporaryaffairs.Chapter7EdmundSpenserLifeandWorks

Chapter7EdmundSpenserLifeandWorksHismasterpieceTheFaerieQueeneconsistsofsixbooks.Heplannedtowritetwelvebooksbutonlyfinishedahalfoftheproject.Thetwelvebooksaretowriteabouttwelveadventures.EachknightrepresentsavirtuesuchasHoliness,Temperance,Chastity,Friendship,JusticeandCourtesy.Theevilfiguressymboliseherenemies.Thedominatingthoughtsofthislongpoemarenationalism(seenfromthecelebrationofQueenElizabeth),humanism(seenfromthestrongoppositiontoRomanCatholicism),andPuritanism(showninitsmoralteachings).
