Ourstorybeginsin495ADduringtheNorthernWeiDynasty,aperiodwhenBuddhismflourishedunderimperialpatronage.EmperorXiaowen,eagertopromoteculturalexchange,invitedtheIndianmonkBodhidharma(knowninChineseasDamo)toChinatospreadBuddhistteachings.However,itwasnotDamowhofirstestablishedthetemple,butratherEmperorXiaowenhimself,whoorderedtheconstructionofamonasterytohouseanothereminentIndianmonk,Batu(orBuddhabhadra).
InitiallynamedtheShaoLinTemple(少林寺),meaningYoungForestTemple,itwasbuiltinthedenseforestsofSongshanMountain.Thenamereflectedbothitslocationandthemonasticidealofharmonywithnature.Littledidtheyknow,thisyoungforestwouldsoongrowintoaglobalicon.
