MargaretHamiltonwasabrilliantmathematicianandcomputerscientist.Shewasbornin1936inPennsylvania,USA.Fromayoungage,sheshowedastronginterestinmathematics.Afterhighschool,shestudiedatRadcliffeCollegeandlaterattheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology(MIT),wheresheearnedhermastersdegree.Inthe1960s,HamiltonjoinedthenewlyformedSoftwareEngineeringCorporation.Herworkquicklytookhertothemoon.

Atthattime,theUnitedStateswasracingagainsttheSovietUnioninspaceexploration.TheApolloprogramwasamajorprojectaimedatlandinghumansontheMoon.Hamiltonplayedakeyroleinthisprogram.Sheledateamofengineersandprogrammers,workingontheonboardcomputersoftwarefortheApollomissions.Thissoftwarewasresponsibleforguidingthespacecraftandmakingcriticaldecisionsduringthemission.

ThejourneytotheMoonwasdangerousandfullofchallenges.TheApollo11mission,thefirsttolandhumansontheMoon,wasnoexception.Justbeforethespacecraftlanded,thecomputerreceivedtoomanyinstructionsatonce.Itstartedtoworkslowly.Iftheproblemwasnotsolvedquickly,themissioncouldhavefailed.Hamiltonandherteamworkedtirelessly,analyzingtheproblemandfindingasolution.Theyreducedthenumberofinstructions,allowingthecomputertooperatecorrectly.Thisbrilliantworkwascalledthesoftwarepatch.Thankstoher,theApollo11missionwasagreatsuccess,andNeilArmstrongandBuzzAldrinbecamethefirstpeopletowalkontheMoon.
