Therapidgrowthofdatacommunicationshasbeeninfluencedprimarilybytheincreasingneedtomoveinformationtoandfromcomputers.Moderntime-sharedcomputerscancommunicatewithmanydatastationssimultaneously.Otherformsofdatatransmissionwhichthetelephoneandtelegraphlinesarecalledupontohandlearebatchdatatransmission,real-timetransmission(asinthecaseofairlinereservationsystems),bankingandcreditdata,man-computerconversationwiththeaidofgraphics,datacollectionsystemsandautomaticmeterreading.Thecombinationofcomputersanddatacommunicationplacessuchnewrequirementsonthesystems,whichmusthandlethem,thatonecanrefertothembetterasteleprocessingratherthantelecommunications.[1];Teleprocessingstartedwiththeairlinereservationsystems,wherethedistributionofcomputerdataisnotasimportantasthemaintenanceofaninventoryofseatsforthewholesystemandtheabilitytoaccesssuchaninventoryrapidlyatanumberofdistantpoints.Anotherexampleisthatofthebanks,whodesiredtocentralizetheiraccountingandprovideaccesstoacentralalltheirbranches.Basically,therearethreereasonsforthedevelopmentofteleprocessingsystems:therequirementforcentralizedfiles,theneedtodistributecomputerservicesandtheadvantagegainedbyhavingflexibilityinlocationoftheoperatingstaffwhichutilizesthesystem.;Initially,boththeairlineandbankingoperationscanbeestablishedonaprivatebasis,whichwouldminimizetheneedforswitchingoperations.Butinbothcases,theneedtoexpandbeyondprivateoperationssoonarises.Inthecaseoftheairlines,theneedarisestoaccessthefacilitiesofotherairlines;andinthecaseofthebanks,certaincommondatafacilitiesmaybesharedwithotherbanks.Eventhoughprivatenetworksmaysufficeformanyservices,theneedtoprovidedatacommunicatio
