IwasgettingoffatubetraininLondonwhenInoticedawomancoughing.Isloweddown,watchinghercarefully.Ihadlearntthatcoughingisrarelyasignthatsomethingisterriblywrong.Suddenly,thewomanstoppedcoughing,hereyeswidenedandshebentover.

WhenIwentovertoaskifshewasOK,shelookedupatme,panicked,andpointedtoherback.Istartedhittingherbackandscreamingforhelp.Despitehavingwatchedafewvideos,IwasterrifiedthatIwouldntbeabletocorrectlyperformtheHeimlich,afirst-aidmethod,andthatIwouldhavetowalkawaywithguiltforherdeath.Butitwasjustthetwoofus,aloneatanundergroundstation;ifIdidnttrytohelp,noonewould.Thankfully,muchlikewithmyfriend,afterafewsharphits,whateverhadbeenstuckinherthroatcameloose.Shethankedme,almostembarrassed,andwalkeduptothelift.Ifollowedbehindher,shaking,withtearsinmyeyes.

Bythetimewereachedthelift,wehadbothcalmeddown.Shetookmyhandsandthankedmeagain,beforedisappearing.Shemighthavebeenfinewithoutmyhurriedhitsonherback—Imaynothaveactuallysavedherlife—butatleastsheknewthatsomeone,astrangerwhomshewouldneverseeagain,cared.

Thisexperiencealsotaughtmeaboutthebystandereffect,wherepeopleassumethatothersareassumedtobeavailableduringanemergency,anddirecthelpfromothersisfarlesslikelytohelp,leadingtoinaction.Igetit:thefearofmakingthingsworse,especiallyifyouhavenomedicaltraining,isreal.Researchsuggeststhatwhena“medicallycompetent”personisassumedtobeavailableduringanemerge
