Introduction?It is universally acknowledged that English language is playing an increasingly important role in present-day international exchanges and competition. Ever since China’s entry into the WTO, remarkable changes and progresses have been made in such areas as politics, economy, ideology and education. What is more, foreign exchanges in these areas are dramatically on the increase. The current situation naturally leads to the country’s ever-increasing demand for talents, non-English majors’ unprecedented enthusiasm in learning English, and the society’s increasingly high demand for university students’ comprehensive ability in applying the language. However, influenced by factors of various kinds, university students in China are weak in practical ability to use English, and it is a common phenomenon that university graduates are still unable to listen and speak even after they have passed CET4 and CET6?( College English Test Band 4 and Band 6). All these causes have made non-English majors’ English learning a hot topic across the country. Furthermore, more improvements have been made in?“Syllabus for College English Teaching” and more reforms have been made in CET4 and CET6. All of these bring about a new?“Syllabus for College English Teaching” and a new era of college English tests.?This paper is made up of three parts. The first part focuses on the new situations non-English majors face in English learning. The second part concerns the problems arising in the English learning of non-English majors and the analysis of the causes bringing about these problems.
