He graduated from Harvard, and taught in a school for a short time, then became pastor of the second church of Boston in 1829. He resigned this position and began his literary life. At this time, he travelled to Europe, spending most of his time in Italy and England. During this period, he met many of the important writers of his time who exerted great influence on him. In particular, Thomas Carlyle, remained a lifelong friend and an important influence on Emerson’s work. He was deeply influenced by romanticism and gradually formed his own transcendentalism. He returned to his country in 1834. In the time following, he published Nature that includes almost all his important ideas. From that time on, he made addresses everywhere publicly and gradually became a celebrated scholar in America. His ideas in his speeches touched the whole American that he was considered as the declaration of independence of American literature.Emerson’s main works include Nature, which met with mild reception. However, two speeches in the next years, The American Scholar and The Divinity School Address, made him famous. Meanwhile, Emerson embarked on a series of lecture tours in England and America. Many of his lectures were later distilled into his famous Essays and other books. All the ideas and thoughts in his lecture caused great astonishment in American society.II.
