But some scholars have their own opinions.Goffman defines greetings as?“access rituals” consisting of two types: passing greetings and engaging greetings.?Firth shares the similarity options with Goffman. He also defines greetings as rituals, but with verbal and non verbal forms. Verbal forms may be anyone of the three linguistic units: question, interjection and affirmation. Non verbal forms are composed of body language.?Though different scholars have different definitions for greeting, one at least can say that it is used to establish and enhance the social relationship between speakers.?A. Description of Greeting?Greeting, as a common phenomenon in all languages, exists everywhere. It provides the means for opening conversations appropriately, and for establishing, maintaining and negotiating social relationships.1 So, some fixed expressions are often used. Such as?“how are you”,?“how do you do”,?“nice to meet you” and so on.?It is also a way for human beings to intentionally communicate awareness of others presence, to show attention to, or to affirm or suggest a type of relationship or social status between individuals or groups of people coming in contact with each other.
