Language is closely related to culture and is the carrier of culture, and can be said as a part of culture. Culture and language depend on each other for existence. Idioms, as the treasure of a nation’s language and culture, formed in a particular period and passed on from one generation to the other generation; reflect the national feathers of the native speaker. So there is no doubt that idioms are also related to culture and carries a large amount of cultural information. Without idioms, our language would become dull and dry, whereas an appropriate use of them in our speech and writing will add the strength and vividness to the language. They are a good way of knowing much philosophy and deep thought of other peoples, we can easily discover the genius, wit and spirit of a nation in its idioms.? There have existed a large number of idioms in English and Chinese. Human experiences and observations of the world are similar in many aspects, for this reason, there are some similarities between English and Chinese idioms, for example,?“as stupid as a donkey”?“蠢驴”,?“to kill two birds with one stone”?“一箭双雕”,?“a rat crossing the street is chased by all”?“老鼠过街,?人人喊打”,?“strike while the iron is hot”?“趁热打铁”,?“an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”?“以眼还眼,?以牙还牙”. English and Chinese belong to different language families, each language has its own specific cultural properties, and the expressions of idioms are different in English and Chinese. For instance,?“spend money like water”?“挥金如土”,?“to kick the bucket”?“翘辫子”,?“like mushroom shoots after a spring shower”?“如雨后春笋”,?“as strong as a horse”?“壮如牛”,?“a lion in the path”?“拦路虎”. Consequently, we should know much about cultural elements between English-speaking countries and China and in turn get better understanding of idioms by learning the culture background behind them, we can express
