There are hundreds of thousands of colors in nature and the use of color words is universal. All kinds of colors in the nature are closely linked with human being’s life. White, black, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple are the basic colors which constitute the colorful life of the society.In Chinese and English, the words that are used to denote different colors are very rich. We should not only pay attention to the dictionary meanings, but also take more care of their connotations. Although different people have different languages and different expressions of color terms, their thinking and social activities share a lot in common， which makes it possible for color terms to have similar associations in Chinese and English. However, owing to the differences of each nation’s custom, social system, geographical position, historical tradition, and religion and so on, the same color words display unique features of each nation and are given different associations. According to the frequent communication between China and English-speaking countries and the natural features of the colors, there are also similar associations of the same color words. This paper analyzes the similar and different associations of color words through the comparisons between Chinese and English from white, black, red, blue, green, yellow and purple so as to better understand the color words and the cultural connotations of two languages.
