Idioms can be reflected from the environment, life, history, and culture of the native speakers as well as their innermost spirits and feelings. Besides, the words of the wise and experiences of the ancestors have become incorporated into idioms, which leave people a precious sum of wealth from which they can learn about their languages and cultures. It is believed that idioms are the most culturally loaded element in any language’s vocabulary.This paper will make a comparative study of English and Chinese idioms. Idioms are related with cultural background of the nation. English idioms and Chinese idioms respectively belong to different language families. Chinese belongs to Sino-Tibetan language family. English belongs to Indo-European language family. There are many differences in the origins, classifications of English and Chinese idioms. Because vast differences exist between English and Chinese culture, differences exist in English and Chinese idioms, too.The ability to understand idioms is important for successful communicators. It is necessary for us to have such knowledge of differences between English idioms and Chinese idioms. In order to communicate effectively with native English speakers, the study of the relationship between culture and idiom is significant and promising.II. Culture and IdiomA. Definition of IdiomThere are a lot of definitions of idiom by different scholars and in different dictionaries. Here are some of them:?Idiom, the language peculiar to a people, country, class, community or, more rarely, an individual; the structure of the usual patterns of statement etc; a construction, statement etc, having a meaning different from the literal one or not according to the usual patterns of the language1.Idiom, a group of words in a fixed order having a partic
