A Study of Misinterpretation in Intercultural Business Negotiation Abstract With China’s entry into World Trade Organizations (WTO), intercultural business negotiation has been more and more prevalent. Now intercultural business negotiation plays a key role in the international trade. The success of enterprises will heavily depend on the success of negotiations. The reasons for choosing this to study are as follows: China pays more attention to world business trade now; trade between China and other countries is increasing rapidly. There are several elements influencing the result. The thesis gives an introduction to this problem. There are two main aspects which affect negotiation deeply. The first one is culture. Culture is divided into several parts: art, morals, law, customs and any other capabilities and habits acquired. These elements become the main object to study for many famous experts. The thesis aims at analyzing three elements—religion, customs and values. The next concern is language. Language is composed of verbal and non-verbal forms. Each country has its own language to use and it has a close relationship with culture. Understanding what roles cultures and languages play is very important. The suggestion from the research will be very useful to avoid misunderstanding. Learning own culture and other cultural groups’ is meaningful to negotiators. Writing this thesis is helpful to understand the differences among the people who come from different nations and speak different languages. Furthermore, this thesis analyzes the reasons which cause the misinterpretation by means of the examples. In the concluding part, there are some suggestions to avoid the mistakes.
