Acknowledgements A number of people are instrumental in the completion of my thesis. My thanks firstly go to my supervisor, Associate Professor Hong Chen of East China Normal University (ECNU), not only for his efforts in introducing me to adoption studies and his guidance in connecting research resources, but also for the encouragement and advice he has given me along my graduate studies. Thanks also go to Professor Jennifer Kwon Dobbs who was introduced to me by Professor Chen. Being a leading expert in international adoption studies, Professor Dobbs has assisted me greatly in contextualizing this topic and in directing me in picking my area of interest. This study is also enhanced by my interviews with the Children’s Home and Society in the state of Minnesota in the US and the Intercountry Adoption Services in the state of Victoria in Australia. I am particularly grateful to these two organisations, which have allowed me to establish a physical touch to the practice of intercountry adoption. They responded to me instantly when I requested for an interview and were so willing to share their experience in adoption practice. I would also like to extend my thanks to the Graduate School of ECNU and Australia China Council for their funding for my study trip to St. Olaf College in the US and La Trobe University in Australia respectively.
