T he sediment deposition directly results in the loss of storage volume of reservoirs and lakes and the rising of riverbed, indirectly influences the normal running of flood control, w ater supply, electricity generation, irrigation. This paper analyzes the seasonal character of sediment of the M anas River from 1960 to 2005. Furthermore, the factors affect- ing the change of sediment are explored. The results show that there is a big concentricity in the inneran- nual distribution of sediment of the M anas River. 93 percent of sediment discharge concentrates in sum- mer . There is an upw ard trend in the sediment discharge in all seasons. T he soil erosion modulus at the e- 2 2 rosion region above Kensiw ate station is 802. 78 t/ ( km # a) in 1960s, w hile 2 056
