Physical exercise intervention on mental health of the home-alone
elderly in rural areas in the Pearl River Delta region

Abstract: By applying methods such as Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), the author investigated the current condi-
tion of mental health of the home-alone elder in rural areas in the Pearl River Delta region, made up exercise pre-
scriptions to do an intervention experiment on them, thus analyzed the effects of physical exercising on the level of
mental health of the home-alone elderly, and revealed the following findings : 1) the level of mental health of the
home-alone elderly in rural areas in the Pearl River Delta region was lower than the normal level nationwide; the
level of mental health of the home-alone elderly in rural areas in the Pearl River Delta region was lower than that of
the non home-alone elder, and the difference was significant; 3) after physical exercising intervention, the level of
mental health of the home-alone elderly in rural areas in the Pearl River Delta region increased generally, and the
difference between the results measured before and after intervention was significant.
