Abstract: T he FEM w it h time marching is employe to analyze the time omain of secon or er non-linear 3D w ater waves.

The free surface boun ary con ition an the bo y boun ary con ition are satisfactory to secon or er at each time step The
iffraction w ave is absorbe with an artificial amping zone instea of Sommerfel ra iation con ition, an at each time step
the velocity potential in t he flui fiel is solve by the FEM . T he iffraction of the vertical circular cylin er is selecte as a
numerical example for verifying the efficiency of the present met ho . T he time histories of w ave elevations an w ave forces on
the cylin er are calculat e . The results have been compare with those by the previous t heoret ical met ho .
