The economy returned to positive growth since the summer of 2007, but there are signs that things are still getting worse. Jobs: Still losing ground Fact: The economy is still shedding jobs Opinion: A true recovery cannot take place until a good number of jobs are created each month Recession: The longest ever Recession : “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.” (NBER: National Bureau of Economic Research ) Opinion: It does not mean things feel better yet for most businesses and consumers -- a recovery begins at the trough of the recession. Recessions are part of a normal economic cycle, but they are painful for businesses and consumers. McDonalds to Shut Business In Iceland October 27, 2009 McDonalds will shutter its business in Iceland on October 31 because it is too expensive for the franchise to operate after the countrys financial crisis. The decision to close the restaurants was mainly due to the severe depreciation of the Icelandic krona and high taxes on imported food. McDonalds Europe said in a statement that it would not seek a new partner in Iceland due to the state of its economy and the complexity of doing business there.
