Particle sw arm optmi ization ( PSO ) is u sed to optmi ize the param eters in the form ula and an optmi ized universal m ulti-index form ula for comprehensive eutrophication evaluation, a specia l case ofwhich can also be suited for single index evaluation, is thus set up. By apply ing this formula to the practical eutrophication evaluation of sixty-five lakes of various kinds in different regions in China, the results of this evaluation, w hich correspond w ith the real conditions, are basically in accord w ith those obtained by other evaluation m ethods, such as the revised Carlson index form ula ( TSI ) and
