General mult-i phase intelligent control method
for traffic flow at single intersection

Abstract: A novel general multi-phase signal control method was presented based on the idea of object-
oriented design to increase the efficiency of intersection signal control. A general single intersection model
was built up to adjust the phase number and traffic flow in time based on the distributing information of
traffic flow for current intersection. Aimed at minimum vehicle time delay, the intersection signal phase
and the green light time were optimized respectively with fuzzy control technologies. Comparison of result
of simulation with application data with that of an actual signal control method show that this new signal
control scheme can make the traffic flow balanced and reduce the average vehicle time delay.
