不可言而言之 ———解析《苏菲的选择》的叙述策略 曾传芳 内容提要:威廉 ·斯泰伦的《苏菲的选择 》被认为是“大屠杀 ”文学的经典之作。作品以修辞 性叙事和批评性元叙述 ,不仅重述了惨绝人寰的纳粹大屠杀事件 ,反思了人性之恶 ,还探讨 了小说本身的构思与创作。本文认为 ,作品的叙述策略独出机杼 ,将修辞性叙事与批评性元 叙述相互交融 ,建立了文本内部的对话关系。作家使用修辞性叙事 ,立足现实进行历史言 说 ,从而使得历史、现在和未来进行对话。同时 ,元叙述话语使小说具有深刻的思想性和尖 锐的批评性 ,不仅彰显了语言的力量 ,也肯定了文学的功能。 关键词 :威廉 ·斯泰伦 　《苏菲的选择 》　修辞性叙事 　元叙述 作者简介 : 曾传芳,博士 , 四川外语学院副教授 ,主要从事美国文学研究。 T itle: On the Narrative Strategies of S ophie ’s Choice Abstract: W illiam Styron ’s Soph ie ’s Choice is deemed as one of the classics of Holocaust litera ture. Emp loying the narrative as rhetoric and critical metanarrative, the novel not only rewrites the extremely cruel Nazi Holocaust and reflects on the evil of humanity, but also discusses the concep tion and creation of the novel itself. The narrative strategies are unique. The narrative as rhetoric and the metanarrative are blended and corroborated with each other, p roducing a text of heteroglossia. U sing narrative as rhetoric, the writer narrates the past with an aim of addressing the p resent, thus creating a discourse in which history is in a dialogic connection with the p resent and the future. Metanarrative discourse endows the novelwith p rofound thought and p iercing crit icism , making the power of language manifested and the function of literature reaffirmed.
