The Bob and Rob Show Study Guide Lesson 146: Ghosts July 13, 2008 SHOW NOTES The topic is a bit scary this week. Ghooooooosts….wooooooooooooh! Dont listen alone  PHRASAL VERBS IDIOMS to scare away / scare off 1) To make somebody or something leave, and stay away by frightening them e.g.: The ghosts scared away all the people from the graveyard. The farmer used firecrackers to scare off the birds. 2) To accidentally make somebody afraid or nervous about what they are planning to do e.g.: Bill wanted to marry Sarah, but he was scared off when he heard from a friend that Sarah used to be a drug dealer. Companies shouldnt talk too much about their internal problems, or they might scare off their investors. “to scare into” To make somebody do something by frightening them e.g.: The mafia scared the man into confessing the crime. Bob scared Rob into doing the Bob and Rob Show. IDIOM: 1) a dead end Literally this is a road that ends with no other turnings. Idiomatically it means a point where no progress can be made” e.g.: As far as AIDS research is concerned, it seems that scientists are at a dead end. 2) “dead and buried” AND “dead and gone” This means to be long passed and forgotten e.g.: Whenever I argue with my wife, she always brings up these dead and buried issues from the past. Someday when we’re dead and gone, the Bob and Rob Show will live on. 3) dead meat To be in serious trouble e.g.: If you call the bully a name, you will be dead meat. BONUS IDIOM: in the dead of night This means in the middle of the night, or in the early hours i.e., 1 or 2 or 3 Oclock in the morning; a time when most people are asleep e.g.: he rode his horse in the dead of night, desperate to get help for his family.
