Unit 1 BUSINESS BASICS Objectives: Learn how Business English defines concepts Learn to understand English concepts the English way BUSINESS BASICS What is “business” in general? running a company, operating a hotel or restaurant, investing on car industry, raising pigs for sale, tutoring kids for money, reading for pleasure, dating a boy or girl, planning a murder or rubbery, etc. (whatever you are busy with) farming, fishing, or mining; manufacturing, transporting, warehousing, marketing, financing, retailing, and whole selling; operating a bank or hotel; providing education or health-care services; supplying water, gas, and power; making a non-smoking or environment protection campaign, etc. What is “business” in Business English? The term business means different things to different people. In its broad sense, business is the social process that involves the assembly and use of productive resources (basic inputs) to create goods and services (basic outputs) capable of satisfying societys needs and wants. It is an organized approach to providing customers with the goods and services they want. The word business also refers to an organization that provides these goods and services.
