Abstract:A controlalgorithm forimprovingvehiclehandlingwasproposedbyapplyingrightangletothesteeringwheel,basedon
thenonlinearadaptiveoptimalcontrol(NAOC).Anonlinear4一DOFmodelwasinitiallydeveloped.thenitwassimplifiedtoa2一DOF
modelwithreasonableassumptionstodesignobserverandoptimalcontrollers.Thenasimplifiedmodelwasdevelopedforsteering
system .Thenumerica1simulationswerecarriedoutusingvehicleparametersforstandardmaneuversindryandwetroadconditions.
Moreover,thehardwareinthe1oopmethodwasimplementedtoprovethecontrollerabilityinrealisticconditions.Simulationresults
obviously show theeffectivenessofNAOC onvehiclehandlingandrevea1thattheproposedcontrollercansignificantlyimprove
vehiclehandlingduringseveremaneuvers.
