The relative stud ies include: to setup displays, to put forw ard assessm ent scales for static compressed mi ages based on the standard of subjective assessm ent of quality for colorTV p ictures, and to collect color mi ages and establish a database for subjective evaluation. As an examp le for testing above stud ies, by using a psychophysical method of pairw ise com parison, subjective evaluation expermi ents on optmi al com pression ratio of JPEG and JPEG2000 w ere conducted on displays for the mi ages, wh ich w ere from JPEG and lossy JPEG2000 w ith seven com press ion ratios. Ten subjects took part in the expermi en ts, and 280 color mi ages for 20 scenesw ith d ifferent con tentsw ere used. The expermi ental resu lts showed that optmi al com pression ratio range of JPEG is from 20 1 to 25 1, and optmi al com press ion ratio range of JPEG2000 is from 25 1 to 30 1.
