Listening in Passage 1 1 Look at the photos and discuss who is the most successful and why. Example answer Now work in pairs and discuss what criteria for a successful career are. Do you think you meet any of these criteria for a successful career? money, luck genius … 2 Listen to Passage 1 and check (?) the criteria for a successful career which the following people meet. 3 Listen to Passage 1 again and choose the best way to complete the sentences. 1 (b) 2 (d) 3 (a) 4 (d) 5 (c) Answers Watch the video and find out what advice Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, the world’s two richest men, give students to succeed in career. 4 Work in pairs and discuss the questions. 1 Well, none of my friends or family could be considered successful but Yao Ming and Zhang Ziyi seem to meet these criteria. Obviously they both have natural talent or genius in their fields. They were both affected by timing. They both had lucky breaks. Example answers 2 The media and the market are two other factors: The media give publicity to some people but less or none to others and the market makes a great difference to the financial rewards. 3 There seems to be no reason why success and happiness can’t go together. Perhaps successful people are neither happier nor more unhappy than the rest of us, but we know about their unhappiness in the media. 4 Exceptionally successful people will become leaders in sciences or arts and later their achievements can help society and bring benefits to everybody. However, if the average person does not get the opportunities, this does not seem fair. Passage 2 5 Work in pairs and discuss which of the following benefits you are likely to be offered in your first job. ? medical care ? an annual bonus ? opportunities to travel ? housing ? a pension ? recreation facilities ? a cafeteria ? a company car ? job security
