Atp5-1 GIVEN: The H2-O2 reaction mechanism DISCUSS: the process that result in the three explosion limits. First explosion limit: mean-free path becomes short enough for O, H and OH radicals to react with other species before being destroyed at chamber walls. In the H2-O2 system at low pressures the molecular mean-free path is long enough for the O, H and OH radicals to reach, and be destroyed by the quenching of the chain-propagating reactions and no explosion occurs. As the chamber pressure increases, the molecular mean-free path decreases and the O, H and OH radicals begin to react with other species. At same chamber pressure the chain-propagating reactions prevail over wall radical destruction and the mixture can explode. Second explosion limit: HO2 destruction at chamber wall. As the chamber pressure is increased past the first explosion limit the reaction begins to compete with the reaction for H atoms. The hydroperoxy radical (HO2) is relatively inactive and can reach the chamber walls and be destroyed, effectively quenching the H radicals and terminating the reaction process. third explosion limit: mean-free path becomes short enough for HO2 radical to react with other species before being destroyed at walls. As in the first explosion limit, increasing the chamber pressure causes the molecular mean-free path to decrease. Eventually, The mean-free path becomes short enough for the HO2 radicals to react with other species before wall destruction can occur and the mixture can once again explore. Atp5-4 GIVEN: the CO oxidation mechanism FIND: the primary reaction step in which CO is converted into CO2. ASSUMPTIONS: hydrogen-containing species (H2, H2O) are present APPROACH: The CO oxidation mechanism is as follows: 1 2 3 primary reaction step 4 5 6 7 The three reactions in which CO is converted into CO2 are reactions 1,3 and 7. Reaction 1 is slow and does not significantly contribute to the CO oxidation. Reaction 1 does, howeve
