Task B-5 Occupation Comparison
Lesson plan
Conductor: Liang Jingbi
Date: 23 March, 2009
Class: Class 5, Grade 2007
Purpose:
The students will learn develop argumentation by comparison and contrast.
Objectives: Students will be able to
use comparison and contrast to develop argumentation
imitate some useful sentence patterns from the sample article .
Resources/ Materials:
1. Textbook: Write to Learn (chief editor: Zheng Chao)
2. Powerpoint: Task B-5 Occupation Comparison
3. Handouts after class
Activities and Procedures:
Make comments on the students’ previous writing assignment If a World Lacked….
Draw the students’ attention to the two teaching objectives: skills in developing argumentation; imitation.
Ask the students to discuss two examples to elicit the skills to develop argumentation: comparison and contrast.
Introduce comparison and contrast so the students have a general picture of the two skills. (comparison: similarities; contrast: differences; function: getting a clearer picture of things and supporting the main idea)
Before the students read the sample article Teachers and Actors, have a warm-up discussion: Could you think of any occupation sharing similarities with teachers? In what way? Teachers might find some interesting ideas from the students. (aiming to stimulate ideas from the students)
Let the students read the sample article Teachers and Actors to see how their ideas are similar and different.
After the reading, let the students discuss three questions:
1) Teachers and actors are being compared and contrasted. Which is the focus? Teachers or actors?
2). How many parts are there in the sample article?
3). Could you summarize the central idea of the whole article? Does the author focus on similarities or differences?
7. Analyze the article with the whole class. Point out the article focuses on the qualities of a teacher by comparison and contrast.
8. Ask the students to write two paragraphs by imitating the sample structure
